2010 marked the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. for the NES and fans were understandably underwhelmed when Nintendo kinda, sorta, didn’t really go all out for the occasion. Sure, that limited edition red Wii system was snazzy, but the software “celebratory” release was sadly lacking. A fancy red box turned out to be little more than a shallow shell housing a 15 year old SNES port and a book/cd combo that offered barely even a slight glance at Super Mario’s rich platform history.
Turns out Nintendo is releasing that fancy Limited Edition Console in the US after all (along with a similar themed DSi that I hadn’t heard about). Not only that but they’re sweetening the deal by packing in a copy of *New Super Mario Bros. Wii in addition to both Wii Sports and Resort. If there weren’t about five games that I want coming out in the next couple of months I’d be all over this fucker.
The good news is that in honor of Mario’s 25th anniversary this year, Nintendo is releasing a special Wii in a “Mario-Red” color scheme. The bad is that if you really love Mario enough to buy shit like this then you’ve probably already owned a Nintendo Wii for nearly 4 years now.
According to some Japanese leak (and people who know how to translate that shit into English) Nintendo’s planning a little surprise to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. for the NES later this year. It looks like those lucky fuckers are getting a re-release of Super Mario All Stars for Wii. You know: That cart that came out for the SNES with visual and audio upgraded versions of all the original Mario platformers and the infamous Lost Levels (known as Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan). The package will also include some sweet-ass booklet and a soundtrack featuring music spanning the entire series (up to and including Galaxy).
