The New Club Nintendo Gold and Platinum Prizes = A Reliable Disappointment.
I don’t know why I even bother getting excited about these things anymore. Ever since I was screwed out of my Doc Louis Punch-Out!! demo back in 2009, it’s been hard to not be bitter about the free bones Nintendo tosses out to us fanboys every year. Sure, that trophy back in 2010 turned out to be one of my dresser’s favorite decorations and those pins from last year? Well, they’re in my room somewhere (I think). It’s just that the platinum member’s choice (announced today) between a set of posters and a pack of playing cards feels exceptionally generic.
I guess this is what I deserve for making Nintendo products my financial priority.
I know I’ve been hard on Nintendo when it comes to these prizes. Especially since they’re kind of, sort of (not really) free and all, but come on. Scratch off that Club Nintendo logo and this is stuff that can be found scattered across the floor of every Target across the country. Oh well, there’s always…*sniff*There’s always….ugh, there’s always next year.

The cards look pretty neat, but yeah, this is no Super Famicom Classic Controller.
I was sorely disappointed. I almost hit platinum back in 2009 as well… sadly, I wasn’t online much of June and didn’t do the last few survey’s that would have put me over 600 pts. sigh. 2010 I only made gold and got the calendar, which is pretty cool in my opinion, but not the awesome statue. I totally missed out in 2011… hadn’t been able to buy any new games due to having tots to care for. I loved all the prizes they had for platinum, and was so psyched to hit platinum this year… and we get… cards or posters. Or. Not even an AND. It’s… a little… disappointing. I shouldn’t complain, as it is free, but still. I don’t even want to bother attempting gold or platinum anymore. It just isn’t worth working for.
It really does help to have the mentality that the platinum and gold prizes are just a bonus. In the end if there’s something you really want and are pissed to have missed out on, you can probably buy it on eBay for the cost of one game. If you’re buying games mostly to reach the status then there’s no reason not to go this way.
Still undecided, but probably going for the cards. I do find it a bit confusing that people are actually taking the free game as their reward when those typically go for 5-10 bucks and are always available. Even if they don’t want the cards or posters they could probably easily trade/sell them and get a couple of points cards to buy those same games.
Really I just want an English version of Tingle’s Balloon Fight.
