Capcom, Namco, and Sega are teaming up to bring you… a super-creepy countdown site.
So if you’ve kept your ear to the ground in the game world, you’ve already heard rumblings about a mystery game coming to the 3DS. The big deal being that this game, whatever it is, is a joint venture between three of the biggest Japanese game studios ever: Capcom, Namco, and Sega. Until recently, the only other information that’s been available is this image:
So what the hell are those things? What have they been replaced by?
All Games Beta has a pretty solid theory on what the blocky, multicolored “chromosomes” are meant to represent:
Characters from each respective company, of course! I recognize most of the Capcom cast. In particular, it’s refreshing to see Mega Man (in one form or another) featured prominently, considering how Capcom has kind of been giving the blue bomber the shaft lately. But once we get past Capcom, it’s mostly anime-looking guys I’ve never seen before in my life. You’re crossing over with Namco and not including Pac-Man? Sega with no Sonic? But hey, there’s like 12 generic anime characters, so that’s cool, right?
But, baffling character selection or no, that isn’t what you’ll see on the game’s official site anymore. Instead, you’re treated to a short, eerie animated segment, which takes place from the point of view of a mysterious, latex glove wearing scientist. A keypad glows in the darkness and the photo-realistic hand enters a code. A brushed steel door swings open, revealing water and broken glass. The scientist screams, backs out of the room, and slams his fist down on a red button, sounding the alarm. All the while, an ominous, digital countdown clock ticks away at the bottom of the screen:
The page is accompanied by suitably creepy ambient sounds, too. If you had told me this was a teaser page for Resident Evil 6, I absolutely would have believed you. This looks to be a huge change of pace from your average cross-over beat-’em-up or minigame collection. After watching this, I can see why Pac-Man and Sonic weren’t included in the “chromosomes” teaser. But then again, what the hell are cartoon robots and a little kid with kitty-cat ears doing there? As of now, it looks like we won’t know for about six days.
