Is that a secret project in his pocket, or is Shigeru just happy to see you?
Here’s some news that game fans should find boner-worthy: our main man Shigeru Miyamoto is cooking up a fresh new project. That’s right, in addition to working on Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Pikmin 3, Miyamoto has a sexy new game concept on the way. Click through for video confirmation from the man himself, plus his thoughts on his recent “retirement” announcement, a little insight into his visual style, and even a brief reflection on his own mortality I’m not joking:
WARNING: This video is narrated by a woman with some weird Euro accent. She calls the Wii U the “Vee U.” And she mentions it like ten times. Achtung!
Miyamoto’s stance on photo-realistic graphics doesn’t really surprise me. Ever since Donkey Kong his art style has made it obvious that he’s a cartoonist at heart. 20+ years of creating some of the best and most influential games ever just goes to show that it’s not exactly a bad thing. I don’t think my stomach could handle a photo-realistic Tingle anyway.
Unfortunately Miyamoto stays devilishly tight-lipped about his new project. With the 3DS chugging happily along (apparently selling better than the Wii and DS did at this point in their life cycles?!) hopefully Nintendo is smart enough to have Miyamoto creating some killer app for the Vee U. Beyond that, I can’t help but speculate even further: is this new project an engrossing adventure like Mario or Zelda? An adrenaline-pumping technical power-house like F-Zero or Star Fox? Or maybe something wildly fresh, inspired by Miyamoto’s life, that challenges genre labels all together, like Nintendogs or Wii Fit? It’s no secret that Miyamoto has some level of say when it comes to Nintendo’s hardware design… maybe the Vee U’s tablet controller was designed with Miyamoto’s mystery game in mind?
