“It’s-a me! I-a need-a speech therapy!”
We all know the sound of Mario’s trademark whoo-hoos and yahoos, but if you’re anything like me you never really expected to hear Nintendo’s iconic Italian speak full sentences, let alone deliver a five-and-a-half minute monologue. But that’s exactly what he does in Nintendo’s unusual 3DS tour!
If you watched the video I’m sure you caught it, but if not, keep an ear open for his endearing and weirdly consistent mangling of the word “games” into “gameses.”
Not counting his cartoons or the live-action movie, which featured much gruffer, Brooklyn-accented voices, this is by far the most Mario has ever spoken. I was under the impression that the reason we never heard more than a “Mama mia” or “Let’s-a go” out of Mario was because his official voice would be too hard to understand or listen to for long stretches. The 3DS tour proves otherwise, and I can’t help but wonder if this might mean a gabbier Mario in the future.
Big tip of the hat to Charles Martinet, the voice behind the plumber since Super Mario 64. Martinet has always injected a ton of quirky personality into the character just through monosyllabic exclamations and title screams. This 3DS video is his Mario masterpiece, fleshing out our mustachioed friend through voice.
He also kind of looks like what would happen if Dave Coulier and Jim Gaffigan had a baby.

I tried to mimic the voice for a whole seven seconds and thought my throat was going to cave in on itself.
Also I always missed the Captain Lou voice. I liked him gruff sounding… of course that’s back when I was totally hooked on the brothers.
