Hardware Review: Classic Controller Pro

Wow, playing Super Nintendo Virtual Console games and fighting games is no longer a gigantic pain in the ass! Some Nintendo 64 games are still better served by the Gamecube controller, but if you like being able to run/attack AND jump at the same time then I highly recommend the Classic Controller Pro.

Don’t ask me how I beat ActRaiser with a Gamecube controller. I still don’t know.

“The Future’s So Bright…”

Well, holy shit. Those things are fucking awesome. In the most recent entry in the long running “Iwata Asks” series, the Nintendo president and Shigeru Miyamoto yap at great length about the upcoming 3DS (can you feel the excitment?). But even more compelling are the revelations regarding the company’s previous attempts at bringing 3D technology to the masses. It really is a great read and there are plenty of surprises about Nintendo’s history in there for even the most educated fanboy.

Michael Jackson’s Punch-Out!!

I guess this video has been around for a while but I only stumbled across it for the first time today. Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin steps in as “Little Mac” and *ahem* “takes on” the King of Pop for a shot at the title in this Punch-Out!! parody. The guys that threw this together even went the classy route by not going for the obvious jokes and end up providing a few that are genuinely funny (MJ’s “charge up” attack and Mac’s final blow are pretty damn clever). I’d rather play this than that Michael Jackson: The Experience shit any day.

Nice job, boys.

And Speaking of the 3DS…

…Nintendo held a press conference thingie in the mother land a few days ago to show off some clips from a couple of 3DS games. Unfortunately there’s a lotta yapping over the gameplay (you’ll be hitting the mute button within a few seconds, believe me) but everything seems to be shaping up just fine for the new portable.

Hello!

Virtual Console Wishlist 2011

Today is the first Monday of Anno Domini 2011, and with it comes the first Wii Shop Channel update of the year (presumably… I’m writing this early in the morning, having stayed awake long after I should have been asleep.) Despite my dropoff in posting and enthusiasm about it, Virtual Console games are still coming out in some of these updates, even some good ones, though last year saw a dramatic slowing in frequency. The pace actually picked up a bit at the end of the year with several Neo Geo games, a couple of Capcom’s arcade titles, and Mario Party 2. Looking back on 2010 and cherry picking, I almost feel ashamed for losing so much interest, as several good games did in fact make their way to the VC, including Kirby Super Star, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, and Ufouria, the latter two having never come to North America and being prime examples of the kind of thing I really love to see up for download. It’s just hard to get hyped up every week when it’s equally likely as not that nothing will be showing up, and then to add insult to injury two or three terrible WiiWare games get coughed up.

This post, however, is all about optimism. There are still some great games, rarities, and imports left that I’d absolutely love to see before the Virtual Console is finished, however that may come about. Off the top of my head, here are a few.
